Pros

people in management rarely criticize you because everyone knows you are too busy to do anything right

Cons

1. low pay 2. no career advancement. people that left ase in the past are coming back, not because this company is getting better but because they can't find better jobs. people that stick around know they can't find better jobs. 3. people in management focus on superficial issues instead of the obvious fundamental root problems that burden everyone. 4. management's altitude. for a company that provides manufacturing service to most high tech companies in the world, is it weird that the management always talks about market share and never about customer service? 5. no it infrastructure. people in the sales office spend at least 30% of their time doing something that computers have been doing in other companies for a long time. ase's it infrastructure is 10 times worse than many much smaller companies. 6. no training. refer back to point 5. ase's management wants you to work but not to get better and more efficient at your work. sounds weird but very true. the result is point 2.

Pros

In a consolidating industry, ASE is doing well. It has some natural advantages because its top management understands real estate and has strong government connection in Taiwan and China. Top management is capable. Job is stable.

Cons

(1) Pay is low. Long hours. Add these two together, pay is even lower. (2) Much of the company's direction is driven by the sales organization. The sales teams are driven by short-term performance. A lot of sucking-up to customers. A lot of finger-pointing if quota is missed. (3) Middle management is weak. They have two modes of operation: ignoring you (if customers don't complain) and micromanaging the poop out of you (if customers complain). (4) Limited career advancement. If you don't speak some kind of Asian languages, especially Taiwanese and Mandarin, don't expect to advance much. Since most people you deal with speak English poorly, communicating in English is actually a disadvantage. (5) Lack of IT infrastructure. There is a ton of paper work, think sales forecast, sales report, travel expense, product spec, etc. They make you do them manually. The management refuses to improve your productivity by spending on IT, so you are stuck performing low-skill, long-hour tasks.

Pros

Good to start a career, but don't stay too long.

Cons

Bad culture - no work life balance. Low salary. Mediocre Directors/management. Too many waste time due to meetings (too much!). Less technical job. No better system for performance review. Too much politics!
