All Good Things Must Come to an End

Pros

I write this review with a heavy heart, as it would have read much differently throughout the majority of my tenure at Acumed. However, most everything I believed in and found passion for within this company is gone as a direct result of new leadership (more on that later). As a reflection of my decision to leave the company, I struggle to find what “pros” remain at Acumed. The headquarters are at a great location in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Despite the mass exodus of employees, there are still good people who work there. The company has a truly inspiring past, and a mission worth fighting for.

Cons

Sadly, I feel that the Acumed mission is under direct threat nowadays; hence my sentiment that all good things must come to an end. I saw my share of turmoil and turnover during my time at Acumed. This included three company presidents and, as a result, three distinctly different strategic visions. This was frustrating to say the least, but the company remained true to itself; until February of 2017. This is when the current leadership, starting with the President, began their reign. I have never experienced such a dramatic shift within an organization. Everything, and I mean everything, has changed. Unfortunately, changes have decidedly been for the worse. With the new Executive Team, we saw a fundamental shift in company culture; one that flies in direct contradiction to what made the company a great place to work. The new leadership came in with “guns blazing,” making strategic vision changes and layoffs based upon limited information. Leadership operates within a confirmation bias, and major decisions are seemingly made with disregard to repercussions. This has resulted in truly abysmal morale across departments, and the turnover rate has skyrocketed as a result. Furthermore, long tenured employees, including myself, began leaving in droves over the past year. The alienation brought on by the Executive Team caused even the most dedicated and successful employees to reassess their engagement and belonging within the company. Even HR couldn’t keep it together, resulting in near 50% turnover within a few months. A few more cons off-the-cuff: Dissent and discussion outside of leadership’s narrow vision are met with swift punishment, or even the door in some cases. I went from feeling empowered and encouraged to speak my mind, to remaining silent over fear that I may upset the powers that be. I never questioned the ethical framework of the company until the new leadership took over. Case in point, we began working with individuals who were previously deemed as morally compromised. The President brought in her usual crew of “yes men” which eliminated any sense of support given by VPs to their respective teams; not exactly a healthy hierarchy. There’s a massive breakdown of communication between the Executive Team and individual departments; I personally spent months on end without much of a supervisor or direction. Overall, the day-to-day environment within Acumed is toxic. Alas, I did not write this review as a rant; rather I hope to have shed some light upon this company to any prospective candidates considering working at Acumed. I ask that you take my review into consideration, and to compare what I’ve said to the other reviews found on Glassdoor. I believe you will find a strong correlation between worsening scores and the timeline I’ve presented in this review. Make no mistake; the negativity expressed in this review and others over the past year are a direct result of the current leadership at Acumed. I will also corroborate a few key points made in other posts. We were encouraged directly by the President to write a good Glassdoor review. Accordingly, I believe there is manipulation occurring and being coordinated by leadership. I agree with the sentiment that “what they preach is not what they practice.” By the end, I had lost all trust in leadership. “The Acumed Way” is absolutely bogus; a thinly veiled propaganda piece meant to be pulled over the eyes of employees. I, like others, believe there is a degree of narcissism within the upper ranks of Acumed as well, as they seem oblivious to the detrimental effect they have on the lives of their employees. It would appear that leadership can do no wrong at Acumed (what an absolute joke).

Pros

Some great people in the middle ranks. A history for innovation and Oregon location. Really struggling to list much more.

Cons

All that you hate about the corporate world- Acumed. Leadership is not ethical or real. Company is led by an ego maniac/narcissist that simply can not stop talking for even a minute (I am not kidding) to listen to her leaders or employees. She has purposely surrounded herself with weak “yes” men as any thoughtful challenge or dissent is not tolerated. Some of the fundamentally worst leadership I have ever experienced. Employees are scared, underpaid, and looking for new jobs. Although the “Acumed Way” (mission- credo) sounds wonderful- it is simply false internal marketing- only the very naive believe it at this point. Ugh- time to polish up the resume.

Rewards Complacency and Nihilism

Pros

-Free parking, good location in the heart of the silicon forest. Except it’s medical device, not software. -Benefits are good. Standard PTO to start (3.5 weeks) that goes up the more years you put in with the company. Healthcare premiums are good, but not as great and outstanding as leadership would have you believe. Pretty standard 6% 401K match. 8 Hours of volunteer time a year is kind.

Cons

First, I want to say that anyone reading these reviews should pay close attention to the dates of posting. Notice the recent uptick in positive reviews? Notice how generic and similarly worded they are? As another review has pointed out, it would appear that leadership is planting positive reviews to offset the (accurate) negative ones. All of the negative complaints posted in the last two years, and especially in the last 6 months, should be looked at as accurate representations of Acumed’s culture. -You will be poor if you work here: Compare any job listing with Acumed to similar jobs in the Portland Metro area (or even just domestically), and Acumed doesn’t pay the median of market value. They pay BOTTOM of the range, if not severely below the range, depending on the position. This has been a complaint for years, and while job grades and descriptions were audited in 2016, clearly, it was done incorrectly, as people are still leaving in droves for more lucrative offers in the area (so, often times, changing careers) and HR is forced to stick another finger in the leaking dam. Thankfully, HR is bloated enough that they can stop the leaks...temporarily. -Messaging Spoken Doesn't Match Actions: Your job is secure they tell us, after laying off positions and then rehiring those positions with people from other medical device companies. You are paid fairly, they tell us, after we look at Glassdoor, LinkedIn Pro and Salary.com to find that we are not (most positions are 30%-60% off of midline). We don’t have the funds right now to raise wages, they tell us, after pumping funds into an onsite gym and a fancy new lobby. -Your Voice Doesn’t Matter: Employee engagement is ignored. Surveys were sent out quarterly, then yearly, to see how people felt about the company and to gauge if improvements were being made, yet important criticisms are not being handled, while simple ones like implementing summer hours, installing a gym on one (not both) campus, and bringing in a rent-a-cop a few days a week give the impression that changes are happening. -Entitlement of Leadership: One of my defining moments at Acumed was when one of the executives (one who, as of this review, is still there), at our monthly all staff got the company excited for our monthly sales report, hinting that we would be getting a $50 bonus due to a positive sales month. This may not seem like much, but it’s a weeks worth of groceries, or two fills of my gas tank; it’s not an insignificant amount of money. When he reached the end of his presentation he essentially said “Psyche! Better luck next month!” You could feel the hearts in the room sink as he ended his presentation and someone else took over. This was a low blow from someone who is disconnected from his workers and doesn’t remember what it’s like to not be getting a million+ year salary. Most of the executives and leaders who believed in, and lived Acumed’s mission and cared about the people who keep it afloat, trickled away in the last couple years. The ones left that seem to actually care are down to the VP’s of Manufacturing and Sales Ops. Most of the ET are cutthroat individuals who would can, and have, cut entire departments around the holidays and fired someone with a newborn (two weeks old). Yet they stand up in front of us and say how they put the PEOPLE in the company first, and how rare that is in an employer and hey, don’t worry, your job is secure. A lot has to change before this company gets better and truly puts value in the people that make it run.
