Pros

The only pro I can come up with is what others have pointed out, if you're fresh out of college and looking for that first gig you can get a start here. That being said, you should exhaust all other options first. It's good padding on a resume but it ends there. The negatives vastly outweigh this one aspect.

Cons

Almost too much to go into. Employment here is determined by comradery with management and little else. In my 3 years at this place I never received a review and had only one marginal raise. Senior staff and new employees alike are cut loose with no warning, and on a very regular basis. Management is completely inept and prone to their emotional whims. You are expected to be on call at all hours on all days and the wages do not reflect this responsibility.

Pros

I really enjoyed working with the other designers, they're a great group of people. They eat lunches together and frequently hang out after work together or over the weekend. A very tight knit group of friends.

Cons

ARS treats their employees like they are disposable. They will work you into the ground for very little pay and then when you're about to hit your limit physically and mentally, you'll be "laid off" and replaced by a Jr. designer who they will pay 1/2-1/3 what you made. The turnover rate at this company is very high. The inside joke is that ARS stands for Always Replacing Staff.

Pros

Nice client list and good start for newbie devs or designers who don't mind being overworked, underpaid or easily expendable. Great people to work with while they last plus the location is nice with easy parking and the metra train next door.

Cons

ARS Advertising, which also runs business legally as ARS Interactive and now Aisle Rocket Studios, has an impressive client list however be ready to develop for IE6 while using poor web standards and working in a multitude of very outdated systems with under-qualified account executives. Decent project management is lacking along with the inept, outdated developing procedures which forces unnecessary yet highly encouraged overtime upon employees with false promises of overtime pay or comp time to entice. Unfortunately anyone who asks for that promised comp time will instead be given a pink slip. Countless social and team building events are also held during lunch and business hours causing even more overtime to meet deadlines. With no employee loyalty or respect it seemed quite odd to hold so many team building events when the revolving door of employees constantly changed the dynamic of the office environment. Biggest con is their awful exiting procedures whether an employee had worked there 1 month or 5 years. Leaving any or all personal items at your desk would be highly discouraged due to the fact that when they decide to let you go you will be asked to an office and never allowed to return to your desk. A very negative work atmosphere was a horrible side effect of this business practice. Ultimately employees are undervalued, extremely underpaid by about 1/3rd to 1/4 of their worth, they are given a false sense of team loyalty then discarded when top management doesn't like them. Loyalty, hard work, passion and initiative are not at the top of managements priorities so keep your head down, bring salsa to the potlucks, dress up for Halloween and ignore everything you've learned about proper coding and you'll get along great!
