Description Shutting out the world isn't just for recluses anymore. In fact, companies like Racal Acoustics make a living from audio products that isolate users from the outside world. The company makes intercom and communication control systems (CCS), such as headphones, microphones, and handsets with active noise reduction (ANR) technology that cancels out ambient noise so speakers and listeners are able to communicate more easily in noisy environments such as cockpits, tanks, battlefields, airport runways, and manufacturing plants. Esterline Technologies, a communications specialist, acquired Racal in January 2009 from ECI Partners for approximately $173 million.
