Reading Is Fundamental is a not-for-profit literacy organization that delivers free books and resources focusing on at risk children ages 8 and under. Through its flagship Books for Ownership program, the group gives more than 16 million new free books to some 5 million kids each year. RIF seeks to increase children's interest in reading by providing motivational support, family involvement, and free books the children get to choose. It is supported by the US Department of Education and donations from foundations, companies, and individuals. Margaret McNamara began the program in 1966 with a group of school volunteers in Washington D.C.
