      Application

I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at hyperexponential in Oct 2025

      Interview

The interview process had four stages. First was an HR screening call to discuss my background and what the team is currently working on. After that, I was given an Excel-based model and asked to recreate it in Python, plus make a few extensions/improvements. The next round was a discussion with two team members, mostly focused on how I approached the Excel-to-Python conversion (design choices, assumptions, validation). The final round was a conversation with the hiring manager. The company presents itself as an insurtech, but in my experience the interviewers were transparent that they were not insurance specialists. Based on what they shared, a large part of the role seems to involve helping clients convert existing Excel models into Python. If you’re looking for a role with strong technical, quantitative, or insurance domain expertise or more advanced technical challenges, it’s worth clarifying expectations early.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

There weren’t many deep technical questions. Most of the discussion was about how I translated the Excel logic into Python and how I verified the Python results matched the spreadsheet. Overall, it felt more like a walkthrough of the case study than a technical interview.

Thanks for sharing such a clear summary of the interview process. hx is very deliberately a melting pot. Some people join with deep insurance experience and grow their SaaS and engineering exposure. Others come in without insurance background and end up enjoying learning how our product shapes real-world decisions, from underwriting portfolios to things like launch risk for space missions. That mix is intentional and part of what makes the work interesting. And special! As always, being clear early on what you want to learn and work on matters. Thanks again for sharing your experience, and hopefully our paths cross again. If you'd like to discuss your experience further, please feel free to reach out to talent@hyperexponential.com. Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at hyperexponential

      Interview

The interview process was entirely enjoyable before the last stage. The technical test is enjoyable, not sure how well it relates to the actual role, and the team are easy to talk to and appear to be well engaged with the interviews. The hiring manager is very eager to help however they can between interviews. The final values interview is strange, and as other comments have said does seem like the interviewers are looking for any reason not to hire you rather than considering your answers. You do feel a bit gaslit and wonder if you even had the same conversation when the feedback comes back. Regardless of technical capability or previous experience, if they find one thing wrong in the values interview - you're out. The hiring manager informed that they were looking to fill the position asap - but over 3 months after applying the job posting is still unfilled. 5 stages: Initial call with hiring manager, technical take-home assessment, technical interview, interview with senior leader and in person values interview.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I’m glad the earlier stages of the process felt engaging and that the team and hiring manager came across as supportive. I want to clarify the values interview specifically. This is a highly structured interview, run against defined criteria and evidence, not a subjective “culture fit” conversation or a test to catch people out. It carries real weight because how someone makes decisions, handles trade-offs, and operates under pressure matters as much to us as technical capability. When there’s a clear misalignment at that stage, we don’t progress, regardless of seniority or technical strength. That’s a deliberate choice to avoid placing someone into an environment where they’re unlikely to thrive. On timelines, the team is scaling and we’re hiring multiple people into this role to support growing demand. That means roles can remain open for longer while we continue to meet candidates and build the team deliberately. Thank you again for the candid feedback. It’s helpful as we continue to improve how clearly we explain our process and decisions. If you'd like to discuss your experience further, please feel free to reach out to talent@hyperexponential.com. We wish you the best in your continued search. Lucy Szypula Head of Talent
