      Continuous Improvement Engineer Interview

      4 Aug 2020

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at dsm-firmenich (Germantown, WI) in Jun 2020

      Interview

Initially received rejection email but then in-house recruiter contacted me that the hiring manager actually was interested in my resume. Did a brief chat with the recruiter about salary expectations and basic experiences. Next, I had to do a HireVue video recording where it gives you barely enough time to understand the question (technical questions) and you have to video record yourself answering and some AI decides whether your inflection and tone is worthy of continuing. After passing that, had one hour interview with the hiring manager/direct supervisor of position. Then had a 30 minute Teams interview with an HR person and another 60 minute Teams interview with the technical manager of the area. At this point I still hadn't had an in-person interview and had received a competing offer which expired before they were planning on bringing potential candidates in for in-person interviews. I called the recruiter with this information and he promptly returned a rejection within 24 hours, which is admirable (rather than ghosting). The process was so long and they can't possibly be spending this much time interviewing dozens of candidates so I'm guessing they just used that I had an offer to make it easy to eliminate my application. They also had me fill out a lengthy online application and then fill out a PDF application. However, it was not possible to fill out the PDF form online and I don't have a printer/scanner so I had to drive to a UPS store and pay to print the application and then take pictures with my phone. This seems avoidable in the era of being able to fill out PDFs on the internet (and avoiding contact with others during a pandemic).

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Standard engineering questions like "tell me about a technical problem you solved", "tell me how you organized a team to work together", "can you give me examples of the types of projects you've worked on, the result, and the time frame of the project". I did not have time to write down the questions prompted on the HireVue app
