      IOS Developer Interview

      23 Dec 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Charlottesville, VA
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at WillowTree (Charlottesville, VA) in Dec 2019

      Interview

There were four rounds in the interview process. The first round was a one-way video interview where you had to record yourself answering some questions Willowtree had provided through Spark Hire. Each question had a time limit to it which in my opinion was an unpleasant experience. I think it may have been better if there's no time limit so that you don't have to see the clock ticking down and rush your answer. 2nd round was a live coding interview in Google spreadsheets. They're not worried about syntax but more so about your thought process. The interviewer was respectful and was quite collaborative. 3rd round was a coding take home project where you had to connect to one of their APIs and perform a series of tasks. They gave you a week to put it together and I thought it was one of the most well thought out and comprehensive take home coding projects I have done. 4rd round was the on-site interview where you go through a panel of interviews from 9:15am to 4pm. I was flying in from NYC and the team that was setting up my travels and prepping me with agenda was extremely diligent in getting me the information I needed. Also they were awesome with the logistics / planning. Each of the interviewers I talked to on the panel were great to talk to. By the end of the onsite and also how Willowtree treats their potential candidates is a true reflection of their care for their people. You will meet with a variety of people during the day going on a tour of the offices (which by the way was amazing!), two live coding whiteboarding sessions, code review of your take home project, and several behavioral type interviews, along with an interesting "Teach Me Anything" presentation. Finally the follow up of the onsite interview, put the icing on the cake as far as how much respect I have for WillowTree. Although I didn't get an offer in the end, they still offered to close the loop with me on getting me SPECIFIC feedback on what interviewers had to say about me good / bad. The HR team went above and beyond and the last part of getting me feedback sets it apart from other potential employers I have interviewed with in the past. Also I can't thank them enough about how far they went to make sure my trip from NYC to Charlottesville was smooth and I would definitely love to work for them in the future if the opportunity comes up again in the future. Overall, despite the awkward first round interview with the one-way video interview. Willowtree's interview process was one of the best I have experienced.

      Application

      Interview

Received email reply back about a week later applying. I was invited to video interview. Where I'm asked series of questions and i needed to record my self answering those questions within a time limit. I understand every company has their own method of hiring employees. But this one just wasn't my cup of tea, it was soulless, i was more pressured by the timer ticking down.
