      Supermarket Assistant Interview

      25 May 2019
      Anonymous employee
      New Malden, England
      Accepted offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Waitrose (New Malden, England) in Apr 2019

      Interview

Initially filled out several questionnaires online (mainly situational), which took a while as they are quite lengthy and each time you pass they invite you back to fill out more. After passing this I was invited to fill out the main application form and, after passing this, was asked to select a date for an assessment day (2 hours, including a group task and 1-1 interview). I was called to be told I had been successful but they had limited shifts available for my top 3 preferred stores. I asked if there were shifts in any of the other stores however the person I spoke to on the phone was not very helpful or friendly and told me that by time she was back in work (about 5 days from then) the shifts might be gone. I felt a bit put on the spot, especially as I applied for full time work, which Waitrose states is 37.5 hrs pw. When I asked if she could send me all available shifts she told me (sounding rather irritated) that she was very busy and speaking to a lot of other people. I had an email to say I was successful but couldn’t be matched with any available shifts right now (despite having full-time availability for a long list of stores) and that I should log onto my account and change my work preferences. I tried to do this but the website was not leading me to the right page. After several phone calls, I found out that I had been put in the wrong ‘candidate hub’ and they would change this for me but it would take 2 more days. So after going through this lengthy process that was very time consuming and cost me a lot of effort, I’ve been told I am successful but they have no shifts available. I feel extremely mislead and I am very disappointed as I know that John Lewis & Partners are a well-respected employer who treat their employees well. I feel like I’d put a lot of effort and preparation into this interview process, for a vacancy that doesn’t exist.

Hi there. Thank you for taking the time to leave a review on your recent application journey. I am sorry to read that you were disappointed by the experience. Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Waitrose (London, England) in May 2026

      Interview

I applied for a Supermarket Assistant vacancy for all SW London stores (If your applying for a London specific vacancy, please ensure you apply ASAP, they only keep the vacancies for London open for 24 hours max), an early application, is always the best application) I am very happy that I have been given an offer! This was honestly one of the best interview/application processes I've been through, everything went smoothly, and on a timely manner. I applied for the role a week ago, and the next day received an email to say I have been invited for an Interview. You then schedule yourself in for an Interview. Literally 2 days after the Interview, I was called and told I have passed the Interview, and they would offer me a vacancy. My best advice would be to research Waitrose' core values and behaviours, and also research company trends. I have put the questions below. Towards the end of the interview, they'll confirm your right to work, your availability, and your preferred locations.
