      Network Architect Interview

      2 Feb 2022
      Anonymous employee
      London, England
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Virtual1 (London, England) in Jan 2022

      Interview

The interview process started with a casual chat about my background, experience, etc. Fairly standard questions and no surprises. The challenge begun when a service provider network topology was presented to me and an in-depth questioning about how traffic would move from one place to the other, starting from the very basics, and gradually increasing in difficulty until I was unable to answer questions. A strong understanding of the entire network protocol stack was required, from fundamentals all the way up to detailed knowledge of advanced subjects. Based on the individual, their mileage may vary on how long the interview goes and how difficult it is. I would expect the individual to have a strong service provider background and a strong understanding of different protocols.

      Question 1

One example; explaining how a packet would move from one side of a Layer 3 VPN (over MPLS) to the other. Starting from explaining Layer 1 upward until the end-to-end journey was complete.

      Interview

There were technical questions based on network topology for a variety of ISP technologies. After that, there were some design and project questions. In the end, there were questions related to interpersonal skills. The interview was conducted by the Head of Architect, who was very friendly, during the whole interview I did not feel under pressure at all. This was a very positive learning experience for me.
