Submitted resume and answered open-ended questions (which more or less replaced a cover letter). About six hours later received what I suspect was an automated email inviting me to record a 3-5 min. introduction video. The email said: "Here at Toptal, we are all about ease and efficiency, and we've incorporated that mindset into our recruitment process. I hope you don't find this method impersonal." Meaning they know that this IS impersonal.
The guidance provided for the video was just a rehash of the questions I'd already answered in depth (see Interview Questions).
This apparent reticence to picking up a phone or scheduling an actual interview was a yellow flag to me. A video introduction is not a terribly unusual requirement, but it's a practice I disagree with for several reasons. It also sent the message that their time is restricted and valuable, but mine is not. The reviews here and their details, however, turned that yellow flag into a red one and I decided not to move forward. I don't have any desire to do a one-sided audition for the chance to get an interview with a company that inspires the kinds of reviews I read here.
