      Contract Project Manager Interview

      3 Feb 2014
      Anonymous interview candidate
      London, England
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Sony (London, England) in Nov 2013

      Interview

I saw the job ad that was posted on a recruitment site by headhunter. It did not say which company was hiring but the experience required was quite fitting for my background so I have applied. About a week later I was contacted by the headhunter informing that they wanted to meet me. I was interviewed by one of the senior pm working there, and the interview itself was actually quite straight forward. In fact it felt like I was led on by the senior PM telling me the type of work they are doing and the type of person they are looking for. It didn't require me to do much talking/convincing as the questions were more like "do you have relevant experience with...." so I just gave straight answer with an example to support my answer and the interviewer seem quite pleased. At the end of initial interview the interviewer seemed very keen and wanted to book me in for 2nd interview straight away. But due to work commitments at the time I couldn't so a 2nd interview was scheduled about 10 days later, rather than having the 2nd interview next day (big mistake I think). During my 2nd interview I was again interviewed by 1 person, who was more on the technical side of job and I think the interview went very well. It seemed that they were very pleased with my experience and the original response was: "among all candidates that we have interviewed, your profile stood out and matched exactly what we were looking for." By this point I thought I'd bagged this job given such feedback from interviewer. But 5 days after the 2nd interview and 1 e-mail to the headhunter chasing for update, I was told I didn't get the job in the end, because they feel my personality did not match the company. It was a huge let down and I think the reason for not hiring was rather unconvincing. Especially for all the positive feedback I have received, on how I'd be so suitable for this position. Looking back at this experience and trying to figure out which part went wrong, I think maybe it was because my answer to 1 question wasn't exactly satisfactory for them: I was asked by the interviewer on my future career plan, in which I have answered that I wanted to gain more experience and work my way towards a more senior producer / pm position in 2-3 years and eventually executive producer (5 years plan). To that answer, the interviewer did mention that: due to the corporate environment and structure, an internal promotion may not come so soon as I expected and that if I'd have problem working as a project manager (as opposed of a senior pm) if no promotion were given after working there for a year. Despite the fact that I said I wouldn't have a problem with it. I also had another interview with SCEE for a completely different department at the same period with the interview mentioned above. The interview process were quite similar and I feel I had no problem communicating with them on role responsibilities and my ability but they left me hanging for about 2 months without any feedback then was told the role was filled internally. Now I understand that they may be a very big corporation with their own process. But if they have people dedicated for recruitment then I think they should put in more effort to get information flowing to candidates. From my own experience, I can conclude that: 1. Despite what they repeat before / during the interview, they don't really have a clear idea on the type of person they are looking for. 2. They will not be in touch and could potentially waste huge amount of your time. I was told 'no' for my 2nd interview about 2 months later, despite the fact that interviewer said they would definitely provide feedback with a timeline (within 2 weeks)

      Question 1

Nothing in particular but Sony is a big corporation with their very sensitive corporate structure. So becareful when answering questions related to this.
