Pros:
People I met onsite were polite and technically competent.
The company appears to work on interesting technical problems.
Cons:
Poorly managed recruitment process for senior or specialized candidates.
Rejection feedback communicated in a derisive and dismissive tone, minimizing senior experience.
Lack of transparency regarding onsite interview costs.
Interview Experience
I initially applied for a Software Engineering role. After an extended period without feedback, I was contacted by the company and encouraged to pursue a newly opened algorithm-focused position, which was presented as a better fit for my background and level of experience.
After a detailed online interview in which my seniority and areas of specialization were discussed at length, I was invited to an onsite interview at the company’s location, requiring international travel, accommodation, and taking time off work. At no point prior to the visit was it indicated that these expenses would not be reimbursed.
Following the onsite interview, I was rejected with feedback delivered in a derisive and dismissive manner, characterizing my profile as being narrowly useful and offering no meaningful advantage over a more junior hire, despite the seniority and breadth of experience discussed earlier in the process.
While I acknowledge that I may not have communicated everything perfectly during the interview, this does not justify feedback that belittles senior expertise rather than addressing any specific concerns directly, constructively, and professionally. The contrast was particularly puzzling given that the role had initially been positioned as more suitable precisely because of my seniority and depth of experience.
After the process concluded, no reimbursement was offered for the onsite interview expenses.
Advice to Management
Be explicit upfront about reimbursement policies for onsite interviews.
Avoid inviting senior candidates onsite if their level of experience is not genuinely being considered.
Ensure feedback is specific, respectful, and proportional to the commitment requested.
