I applied online. The process took 3 days. I interviewed at Safeway (Portland, OR) in Aug 2013
Interview
Get to the store ten to fifteen minutes early. Ask for the person interviewing you at the self-checkout or customer service desk. The person will be notified promptly; you will most likely be directed to a seat in the cafe or at Starbucks. The recruiter will come out and either lead you into a back office or take a seat across from you in the cafe.
Take initiative by starting the conversation. The interview will go better if you show initiative from the get-go. Try something simple, like "How is your day going?" if the recruiter is male. If the recruiter is female, compliment her. In any case, make sure YOU ask the first question!
Don't be afraid to show your (appropriate) funny bone, especially if you are applying for a job that involves dealing with lots of people.
The Safeway interview is quite standard from location to location. If you don't get a job at one location, try the next. You will already know the usual Safeway specific questions and have had time to think about how to better answer them.

Question 1
"Tell me about a time when you had to resolve a conflict."
It was very informative and I felt comfortable with the knowledge that my interview would be considered with the utmost thought. I did not land the position, but have no ill will, they were right in the deli did not suit me. A barista position was far more paletteable
pretty easy and straightforward tho didn't get the job. probably shouldve done more prep. didn't have much experience with deli work which may have been why i didn't get the job but oh well
Great attention to detail and fluid information there were multiple follow ups the process was smooth I would others to look into this opportunity everything was structured communication was fluid
