      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at SMP Engineering (CA) (Glendale, CA)

      Interview

On-site interview in an open space in the same room where other engineers were working. Asked a ton of questions about my experience and how I would approach a project. Was given a small creative design problem to solve. Asked to write my salary on a paper to not share with current staff working there. Of the 2 people that interviewed me one was pretty professional the other had some social issues and seem irritated all the time. Be weary of the 5-star reviews, they call were made in the same time frame so it's likely the employer.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

What is your initial approach in solving an engineering problem?

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at SMP Engineering (CA)

      Interview

The initial contact was professional and kind. However, the subsequent interview felt dismissive; the interviewer dominated the conversation for 15 out of the 20-minute window. It appears the company has a turnover problem because, instead of facilitating growth and attracting ambitious talent, there seems to be a preference for complacency, and it's likely the fault of executive culture. There were no technical questions asked. The panel did not seem to value my interest in professional growth or my specific career goals. Apparently, staying at a company for 3 years is considered "job hopping" by their standards, which explains the retention issues. Furthermore, when I asked about opportunities for cross-training in other engineering disciplines (MechE to Electrical), I was told that departments are strictly siloed and that employees should stay in their lane. Keep in mind, I was unable to get a word in on this lecture for 5 minutes. It was clear that interdisciplinary interest is discouraged. While I received a rejection email shortly after, the feeling was mutual.

      Interview questions [2]

      Question 1

Why are you leaving after only a few months shy of 2 years at your company?

      Question 2

What do you mean by searching for growth in your career?

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We truly value every candidate who expresses interest in joining our team. As a company operating in the aerospace and defense industry, we design and build highly complex, mission-critical systems where precision, reliability, and compliance are essential. Because of the nature of our work, we maintain rigorous screening and evaluation standards to ensure we bring on individuals who are well-aligned with both the technical demands of the role and the responsibility that comes with developing advanced aerospace and defense technologies.
