      Backend Engineer Interview

      22 Feb 2024
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Render

      Interview

Intro calls, then a coding technical, which was a pretty good experience. I was presented with a simple, yet realistic, problem and got to solve it "open-book" style. No Google-style brain teasers, and not the sort of thing you can study for. Finally, a discussion interview in which I was asked to talk explain the most complex project I'd worked on in the past. The questions were mostly behavioral. I was rejected at this stage for technical skill reasons. They likely intend this stage to screen for good communication skills and problem-solving experience, but I suspect it also screens for very-recent experience with super-hairy FAANG-scale problems. I recommend that you pick an experience which is fresh in your mind. Be prepared to talk about it at every level of detail, with elaborate anecdotes from every angle you can think of - design, technical, process, decisionmaking, outcomes, maintenance, etc. Overall, the process felt reasonable and not onerous. I rate my experience as negative only because I didn't feel they made their expectations for the discussion interview clear.

Thanks for taking the time to share your detailed and fair feedback. And for your kind words regarding our practical technical challenge. Our goal is to provide a transparent and respectful interview process, and we’re sorry for falling short here. Going forward, we’ll provide a thorough explanation of the Technical Deep Dive interview session. Specifically, we’ll share our intention to assess our candidate’s ability to articulate complex technical concepts and to understand how their efforts and ownership led to successful outcomes. We’ll continue to ground our interviews in realistic, relevant topics as we hope to give our candidates a deeper understanding of life at Render and strengthen our ability to determine their success in the role. If there’s anything we’ve missed or you’d like to share additional thoughts, feel free to reach out to your recruiting partner or email us at recruiting@render.com. Recruiting Team @ Render
