I had a phone interview. Things started off pretty standard until we got to the logistical questions at the end, then the attitude shifted.
When asked about my salary expectations, I laid out a VERY reasonable amount considering what was listed on the site (I believe the high end of the range was $29 and I asked for $31 per hour). I couldn't believe what happened next but she literally laughed in my face.
She proceeded to tell me about how the amount I raised is closer to what a Director level would earn. She said there were employees that commute one hour to their offices, implying that I should be willing to do the same.
Let me preface by saying if your Directors are earning around $31 per hour at a tech company in Irvine, that is very concerning. For a Specialist position requiring a few years of work experience, you should be compensating your employees fairly, and asking for completely on-site in Irvine for a salary of $29 is absolutely ridiculous. What's even more ridiculous is not being able to maintain composure in an interview and being snarky towards an applicant because of their proposed salary range. I'm glad I got rejected because I could never imagine working with someone like this.
