Sr Software Engineer In Test Interview

      14 Sept 2023
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 5 days. I interviewed at Providence in Sept 2023

      Interview

In short, this was the most unprofessional, and frankly immature, interview process that I have seen. I applied for a Sr Software Engineer In Test position and received an invitation for a self-paced, text-based screening process the same day. The process was straightforward and asked me to verify that I had the relevant skills and number of years required for the role. Five days later I was sent an invitation to interview for the role. The only information that I was provided in the email was the name of the interviewer and the fact that it would be 30 minutes in duration. I looked up the interviewer on LinkedIn and assumed this was the hiring manager and that I would have an opportunity to learn more about the company and the role during our interview. On joining the interview, they introduced themselves by name only and informed me that we would be doing HackerRank problems for 30 minutes. I was able to find a solution to the problem quickly, but the provided unit tests were timing out while running; the interviewer had no knowledge of what the tests were doing. I am positive that my initial solution was well optimized as I've practiced this very problem on Leet Code several times before. Regardless, I was able to get a working solution that passed all unit tests within our 30 minutes together (strangely enough, the working solution was de-optimized with several nested loops). In the last 3 minutes (they had a meeting directly after our session) they were able to provide me an absolutely bare-bones description of the company and the role. They closed the interview by saying that I would hear back from them before the end of the week (this was on a Thursday) because they didn't want to "leave me hanging over the weekend". Friday came and went without any correspondence. On Monday of the following week I emailed the recruiter with some general questions about the role. On Tuesday morning I saw the job get re-posted. It is disrespectful and shameful to ghost a candidate that takes time out of their day to review a company, apply, and spend time interviewing. At no point during the interview process did I speak with a recruiter or get a chance to learn more about the company or the role. The fact that they specifically said I would hear back and then ghosted me is inexcusable. Quite shameful for an organization that prides itself on seeing, hearing, and valuing people.
