I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Principal Financial Group (Des Moines, IA) in Dec 2016
Interview
The interview was conducted by phone. The questions were more general in nature and no real technical questions were asked. I was asked how I came up with the dollar amount I desired for salary, which I thought was a little odd. When the interview was over, I was told they didn't have an opening at that time but they were keeping resumes on file for future reference. (In other words, I found out I applied to have my resume added to the bottom of the stack.)

Interview
The first round was a 30 minute phone interview with a recruiter. This covered basic questions about your experience and interests to see if you would be a good fit for their culture. The second interview was an in-person hour-long interview with three team leaders in the department. These questions went much more in-depth about your experience and previous projects, as well as asking you several standard technical questions (how would you change a Windows registry key, for exampe). They also gave you the chance to ask them questions about the position and what the work would be like.
