      Director of Quality Assurance Interview

      17 May 2023
      Anonymous interview candidate
      San Jose, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Peloton Interactive (San Jose, CA) in Apr 2023

      Interview

The recruiter scheduled an interview and didn’t even show up for the first interview. I had to email him to find out where he was, then he called me back 11 minutes into our scheduled time sounding really out of it and then asked to reschedule us, this is very unprofessional. Next day, screening interview, the recruiter gave me multiple names for the hiring manager in a screening interview so it is clear, he is not clear on what he is presenting. I passed the screening interview and was scheduled for the first round with the hiring manager. Then the hiring interview happens and it is completely different person than the hiring manager names I was previously given, as well as a completely different job than I was told about by the recruiter and how he presented the position were very different things. Hiring manager interview - hiring manager stated there are no requirements for their products across the board, there are no formalized testing procedures (like test cases) and no automation. Everything is largely ad hoc black box testing yet releasing weekly. Hiring manager said in the interview “I don’t want to have to think about quality” and “I don’t want to even deal with it”. Basic engineering 101 is missing from the equation, and a lack of any concern for quality by upper management. Based on these issues, it is no wonder that Peloton has so many quality issues and is constantly in the news with quality problems. I really hope the company gets itself together because this current trajectory is not going to fix the issue that they’re having. I don’t think I can in good conscience recommend this company to anyone based on the disorganization of the hiring team as well as the complete disdain for standard engineering processes, quality across the company and that is starting with the hiring manager for this position. No technical questions were asked in the interview. One very convoluted question by the hiring manager at the beginning of the interview where he couldn’t even really state what he was asking as it was a two pronged question with 2 very different trajectories and when I asked him if he wanted trajectory 1 or 2 he said he didn’t know. Wow. Sigh. I had a follow up call with the recruiter when I told him of the issues with the interview process and he admitted to probably mixing up the job descriptions and hiring managers and everything. He said “Yeah I probably confused this and this and this”. So it is clear I didn’t get a fair shake as the recruiter is completely incompetent and does not know how to represent the company. The hiring manager is not doing the company any favors in representing Peloton with a disdain for quality to perspective quality org employees. Granted it is best to know all of the potholes before joining any company, thankfully I learned all of these things. I learned there is a crater where engineering process and quality should be that will not be solved by the “appearance” of quality without a solid overhaul and transformation of the company and how engineering and the quality orgs currently operate. Should an adult in the company read this and decide they want to be an organization based on facts, engineering basics, standard operating procedures, and have a quality org or even a hint of caring about quality then give me a call.

No technical questions were asked in the interview.

      Question 2

Hiring manager asked a question and when I asked him if he wanted trajectory 1 or 2 for the question, he said “I don’t know”. So it is clear he didn’t know what he was asking.
