      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      I interviewed at Pax8

      Interview

I first had a chat with HR and then some director/higher-up types. That went well and I felt like we gelled. They all gave off an insanely positive impression. Great face to the company. They promised a practical technical interview with the team I'd be working with and that team delivered Leetcode. If you're like me, you prepare differently for a practical interview compared to a Leetcode interview if for no other reason you have bad anxiety. It was a high acceptance medium question--I would have done fine if they'd just been honest from the start, lol. The interviewers obviously didn't want to be there and became hostile when I struggled with the sudden shift from (semi-)practical to Leetcode. To be fair to them, they did give me hints, but between my anxiety, their hostility, and the fact they left me FIFTEEN MINUTES, all I could do was panic. At the end, one of them insulted my character. Bizarre interview indicative of a poor technical culture. If you are good at switching gears, you'll breeze through the tech interview, though. The questions really aren't that hard if you can keep a clamp on your anxiety. I was able to hammer out the last question in ten minutes after I logged off.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Use Kotlin's sum function to sum a string of numbers. Now do it with potentially invalid data. (The actual sort of questions I expected and prepared for, by the way.) Convert string to Roman numeral (told you it wasn't that bad!)

Thank you for your feedback, albeit makes for hard reading. I am making enquiries around your experience, (although this is hard to audit being anonymous). Please feel free to reach out to me on Linkedin so I can look at your specific case. Of course it is very hard to strike a balance using live testing scenarios in interviews, which, of course can cause heightened anxiety. We remain committed to improving all the time, so your comments will be acted on.

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Pax8 in Nov 2024

      Interview

Chat with Tech manager, Product Manager, then in depth technical interview. After chatting with the Tech manager, I got the feeling this would not be a good place to work. I was told the team had a tight deadline to ship an entirely new product using AI. To me this felt like a high stress environment due to unreasonable expectations with few resources. This small team was to design, build, test, and maintain this new product. For such little pay, compared to other places was not worth it. Also calling a company that is almost 15 years old a startup, is a red flag.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Have you used AI to increase your productivity? what is your experience with using AI to increase your productivity?

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and for taking the time to go through our interview process. We appreciate your candid feedback. We understand that every candidate has different expectations and preferences when it comes to work environments. While we are indeed a company with over a decade of history, we continue to operate with a startup mindset—lean, fast-moving, and focused on innovation. For some, that’s an exciting opportunity to make a tangible impact; for others, it may not be the right fit, and that’s completely valid. We’re proud of our team’s ambition and the challenges we take on, including building new products with emerging technologies like AI. That said, we also strive to balance ambition with support, collaboration, and a strong sense of purpose. Your feedback is helpful as we continue to reflect on how we communicate our culture and expectations during the hiring process. We wish you all the best in finding a role and environment that aligns with your goals and values.
