      Mechanical Engineer Intern Interview

      26 Feb 2026
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Ouster

      Interview

Very odd. I went into the interview thinking the internship was optomechanical related but the interview ended up being for mechanical. I was also under the impression that I was meeting with just the lead but during the interview I was greeted by the entire team of around 6 people. They didn't even start with "tell me about yourself" or any other standard interview opening. The first question they asked was, "So do you have any questions for us?" The interview was not really behavioral-based at all. They didn't ask anything related to leadership experience or how I would work in a group or deal with a difficult member. The interview felt way too technical for just an internship. In a way, it almost felt like I was being interviewed for a full-time entry position. The team asked challenging technical questions based on my resume. The overall structure felt as though they didn't know how to properly interview someone. I also found it odd that they kept asking me questions related to my older resume items and not my most recent experience.

      Interview questions [4]

      Question 1

First question of the interview: Do you have any questions for us?
      Answer question

      Question 2

How do the different orientated composite laminates' stress-strain curves vary based on orientation? Why would an application call for one specific orientation over the other? A theoretical question: if you had a PCB, would it behave more like an isentropic material or a composite?
      Answer question

      Question 3

How is design for 3D printing different from other manufacturing processes? What different kinds of 3D printing are there?
      Answer question

      Question 4

What GD&T callouts did you use on the shaft and how would you ensure it is manufactured properly? What was the significance of those callouts?
