      Software Engineer Interview

      26 Apr 2024
      Anonymous interview candidate
      San Mateo, CA
      Declined offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at OneSignal (San Mateo, CA) in Mar 2024

      Interview

The interview process was very smooth and the recruiter was very talented. The team was very smart, kind, and professional, and I would have accepted had I not chosen a different offer that better aligned with my priorities right now.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

What was a time in your career where you had a significant disagreement with a coworker and how did you resolve it?

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at OneSignal

      Interview

      1) Sourcing call, 2) Coding screen, 3) HM screen, 4) Full loop. 1) Recruiter was 10+ minutes late but one of the most pleasant people I've spoken with. Conversation was energetic and productive. Absolute silence for more than a week afterward. 2) Coding screen was a multi-stage, progressive coding challenge. 3) Hiring manager postponed and rescheduled, thus prolonging the interview process further. Then on camera, they were visibly disinterested and distracted. Despite this, I thought this STAR-format conversation went fairly well. Received a copypasta rejection email days later without explanation and no route to follow-up. What an incredible waste of interviewees' time.

      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at OneSignal

      Interview

Introduction with HR for good fit. Then technical phone call interview with Senior Engineer. Was a pretty terrible interview. Interviewer spent most of the hour talking about his knowledge of tech I've worked with and his opinions of them. I probably talked 20% of the time. Seemed more interested in talking about his strengths/beliefs than the actual interview. I recommend having a more structured plan of attack for interviews to best assess interviewee skills.

I'm sorry to hear about the negative experience you had in your introductory interview with us. The goal of this initial interview is to get a sense of your interests and to share information about our technology and values so we can determine if there is a mutual fit in moving forward in our interview process. That said, it sounds like the experience you had didn't live up to the expectations we have for this time. Our team has taken time to reflect on this feedback and how we can make sure to provide a more positive experience for candidates in the future.
