      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      12 Apr 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Tampa, FL
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Nextech Systems (Tampa, FL)

      Interview

An unbearably long process. I understand the need to find the right candidate for the job but five interviews (3 phone, 2 in person), spread out over multiple weeks is simply too much. On top of that the interviewer had to reschedule 2 times due to scheduling conflicts, and was late to one of the interviews. You also have to take a personality test and a rather long IQ test (n-back, general knowledge, pattern matching, etc). The interviews were pretty standard: talk to a manager, an HR rep, meet the development team, answer the same questions multiple times to different people. This whole process could really be simplified down to one or two interviews. Hopefully my experience was the exception and not the norm. There is a simple coding task targeted around consuming a public API and pretty standard interview questions. Based on the interview this place is really into unit testing and angular so brush up on those topics. Ultimately was offered a position but declined as the whole interview process left a poor taste.

      Question 1

The only one that comes to mind other than the 1428 questions and comments about unit testing was about dependency injection.

      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      30 Jan 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Tampa, FL
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 4 days. I interviewed at Nextech Systems (Tampa, FL) in Jan 2018

      Interview

30 minute interview with recruiter. Normal stuff, reviewing experience, getting a feel for what I was looking for. Call was followed up with a coding challenge. The challenge was not overly difficult and included bonus portions. Challenge should not be an issue for anyone at senior level. Follow up interview with VP of Engineering within a few days. Discussed experience, coding challenge, and skills. Some technical questions but not many. Brought in for a 2 hour face-to-face with the team and a one-on-one with VP. Recruiter met me onsite to help me prepare and maybe calm my nerves. Met the team in 2 phases, 4 team members at a time. Kind of stressful and intimidating but the team was pretty laid back. They did not seem overly prepared but I chalk that up to them being engineers, not HR personnel. They were all friendly and asked pertinent questions. I wish they would have led a bit more or were clearer on what they were looking for. The feedback I received later indicated things that I did not discuss/bring up. Not blaming them. Just pointing out that in that situation, with 4 people watching and judging, one's nerves tend to be strung out and can easily miss things or get side tracked. I even asked at the end if there were any red flags, things I missed, etc. which they replied no. Apparently that was not true. :) After about 20 ~ 30 minutes of waiting in the lobby, had a final discussion with the VP. He was friendly and very laid back. He focused on feeling out my personality. Even though I was passed over, it was a good experience.
