      Software Engineering Manager Interview

      19 Mar 2009
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Raleigh, NC
      Declined offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 days. I interviewed at NetApp (Raleigh, NC) in Feb 2009

      Interview

My initial communications with the company was a phone call from HR. We discussed the position and setup a phone interview with the hiring Director. After the phone call, I emailed my resume to the HR person. The next day I spent about 30 minutes talking with the hiring Director. We discussed the position and company. He asked me several questions about my past history and why I was looking to leave my current position. Later that day I received an email from the HR person about setting up an onsite interview. At the onsite interview, I briefly met with the HR person who told me who I would be meeting with. The first person I talked with was the head of the local HR office. He told me about the company and asked me some general questions. We talked for about 20 minutes and was very easy.Next I met with 2 managers who would be my peers managers. We talked about the position and the culture of the company. They asked me a very technical questions but it also was very easy. Then I interviewed with a technical director. He asked me some very technical questions and to solve a IQ questions on the white board. This was the most difficult part of the whole interview process. Last I meet with the hiring director. We went over some more info from my resume and talked about my past experiences in more detail. His interview was easy. I then briefly met with the HR person before leaving. He told me I would be hearing from him in a few days. I received a phone call from the HR person 4 days later with a verbal offer.

      Question 1

A IQ question: I have 9 coins and 8 have the same weight and the last one is heavier. I also have a balance beam to weigh the coins with. I can only use the balance beam 2 times to find the heavier coin. How do you find the heavier coin?

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at NetApp in Mar 2025

      Interview

Sharing a recent experience while interviewing for a managerial role. The process lasted close to two months and unfortunately ended without any closure. Applied online. After two weeks, received an email from HR1 asking for available time slots for an exploratory call. I responded with my availability, but shortly after, received a rejection email. Then HR1 called, asked for my salary expectations. I mentioned the rejection, but she said it was fine — probably a system error — and we continued. Spoke with a director. Then went through three rounds: First round (coding) Second round (system design) Third round (managerial) A week of silence, then HR2 called to schedule a final round with another director. The Director mentioned I’d get an update the next day. 10 more days passed. Then HR1 called again — this time asking for salary documents. I asked about the previous round’s outcome and was told the concerned person was on vacation. When I asked if the offer process was moving forward, she said yes. I sent the docs to HR1 and HR2. That was the last I heard. I sent a follow-up email, but got no response. It wasn’t just the delay that was disappointing — it was the lack of communication and transparency. At no point was it shared that multiple candidates were being considered or that the process could take this long. I understand hiring is complex, especially for senior roles. But after investing time across multiple rounds and sharing personal information, a simple follow-up — even a “no” — would’ve shown basic professionalism. If companies expect candidates to be professional, responsive, and respectful — the same should be expected from the hiring team. By the way the Job is still open even after 5 months.

      Interview

Was contacted by the recruiter. The process happened pretty fast. Had a phone screen with the hiring director. Did not continue as I felt the position requirement does not much match very well.
