      Software Engineer Interview

      27 Oct 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Declined offer
      Neutral experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Neighbor

      Interview

One of the engineering managers reached out to me. We had an introductory call together. After that I had an interview round of three mostly technical interviews. After that there was an interview with the CEO. After the interview with the CEO they asked for references to make an offer. Red flags that made me withdraw before they made an offer: - It's the middle of a pandemic and everyone was in the office. On top of that, they assumed I'd be interviewing in person. I've interviewed with dozens of companies in the past couple months and they were the only ones to even consider holding in-person interviews. - At the time of interviewing they had 17 engineers. Of those 17 engineers, the vast majority of them had less than 3 years of experience and had started at that company as interns, so they had no other industry experience. A few others had worked at other companies but still had less than 5 years of experience total. Only 1 person I found on LinkedIn had worked at a technology company outside of Utah. I did not have confidence that I'd be working with the best engineers with good industry experience and I was not prepared to be one of the only engineers with that experience to come in and bring everyone else up to speed. - I got the distinct impression that this company was looking for "passionate" people who would put work over their personal lives. - They were not open to remote work, even during a pandemic.

      Question 1

The technical questions asked were very easy. It was more geared towards explaining how you would show someone else how to solve the problem.

      Interview

4 rounds of interview in total. The first one is the behavioural, the second is the take-home assessment, the third is an on-site interview, and the last one is with the CEO. It took me about a month; they ghosted me a lot throughout the process. The interviewer wasn't there when I interviewed on-site.

Thanks for taking time to share. That's definitely not the experience we want candidates to have. I recently joined Neighbor and will discuss with the team to see what we can do to improve. Regardless, we appreciate you taking time to interview.
