The interview questions were about how much I knew about the role not about me and my ability to do it. They clearly had an internal candidate they wanted to get the job.

First you apply through the NHS Jobs website. If you are short-listed, they will invite you for an interview 1 or 2 weeks after the application deadline. It's usually a small panel interview. You may or may not have to do a 5min presentation on running a trial. The panel will then go through a set of standardised questions around the job description and your work experience.
