      Security Engineer Interview

      23 Jan 2025
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at NBCUniversal

      Interview

Straight forward and standard interviewing process though I found the hiring mangers expectations to be unclear. I applied to the role, got a interview request from the recruiter, and spoke with them on the phone for about 30 minutes. They followed up with me once or twice afterwards regarding salary range, expectations, etc. It became clear during our conversations that the hiring managers expectations aren't clear. I was told I did not meet their experience and qualification requirements (though I have 10+ years of experience, Bachelors/Masters Degrees in CIS, CISSP, etc.). The recruiter after speaking to the hiring manager seemed to have changed their tone regarding my experience, noting that a role I took was step down when it wasn't (sr. security role into technical specialist role at a world recognized institution) -- but I digress. The hiring range was listed around 130k - 160k, but it was eventually communicated that they are actually looking for someone to be hired at the lower end of that range who can "grow into" the role. If I recall correctly the recruiter was nice until they were able to discuss with the hiring manager. The job looks like it's still posted after many months so anyone's guess as to why is as good as mine.

      Interview questions [2]

      Question 1

Q: Even though you mentioned you make substantially more and are willing to start at 160k, the hiring manager decided the range is actually much lower than what's advertised. Are you willing to come in around 130k?
      Answer question

      Question 2

Q: You went from a specialized security engineering role and then voluntarily moved companies to a more challenging network role at a world renowned institution. I view that as a negative and have decided to low-ball you. Why did you switch roles?
