      User Experience Designer Interview

      27 Feb 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Mozilla in Feb 2017

      Interview

Whole process took 2 weeks. I was emailed a week after I applied, had a phone screen the next day, video interview two days after that, and then second video interview the next week. A few days later they told me they were filling the position internally. First interview was with a UX Designer, and I had to walk through and explain a past project. Second interview was with a Design Engineer, which involved a short technical engineering test. I assume they only give this test to candidates that claim to have coding experience. It was just HTML/CSS and Javascript questions. The interviewers were fantastic to talk to, and it was clear they love working at Mozilla. I was in contact with 2 HR staff, and they were great to communicate with as well. They have a great and efficient system that is unexpected from a large company. I applaud them!

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

What’s your UX process? What is your weakness? What are the differences in designing for mobile versus web? Do you have any thoughts on improving our product or see any opportunities? What's your approach to working with engineers? You will have a very vocal user base, so how would you handle complaints and requests that come your way?

      Application

I applied online. The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at Mozilla in Sept 2012

      Interview

I received an email from a Mozilla recruiter 16 days after submitting my resume. I replied right away to suggest days and times for the initial phone screen. The recruiter replied four days later with a confirmation. I was to receive a call from Bryan Clark four days after that. The interview was overall professional but casual. No one else was on the call. It lasted about 45 minutes. He spent time talking about Mozilla Foundation. He also asked about my design process and at the end asked what I felt was the difference between design and art. Sixteen days later I received a stock email from Mozilla saying they would not proceed with the interview process with me.

      Question 1

The most difficult question was difference between design and art. I do have an opinion on this, and even though he said there's no right or wrong answer, there's still some judgment involved of interviewees' answers.
