      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Mettle

      Interview

The whole process has felt like an unwanted trip to occupied eastern Ukraine while various Mettle engineers denazify you of your knowledge in a series of +3.5 hours way too long special operation interviews. You start with a 30 mins screening video call with one of their engineers, I expected this to be more like an open discussion but most of the questions require a specific closed answer related to technologies, programming, testing techniques, process, etc. If you pass you get to find how deep the rabbit hole goes in three individually separated interviews that don't have any specific order and happen with random people: Logical, Technical, and Cultural Logical - This stage has happened with 2 of their engineers, you are shown a system architecture diagram and you are supposed to talk about it, how you would test it, and what you understand about it. This interview is supposed to be quite free-style but they will come with some broad questions but expect an exact answer. Technical - This stage has happened with 2 of their engineers and you are asked to provide a git account and setup your JavaScript IDE beforehand. The first part is an algorithmical code challenge, I was asked to write a program that prints out a certain number from the Fibonacci row. You cannot cheat using external sources however the engineers on the call will give you lots of hints. On a personal note, I always hated this kind of challenges and I did try to excuse myself in order to find my way out of it even with the risk of failing the interview but the other engineers really wanted me to do it anyway, making a fool of myself in the process and really annoyed me as I was forced to do it but not on my terms. I have basically ended up with them doing the task, which for me has felt like they have performed a poor trephination on my skull. In the second part you can play with their actual repo that has a small JS app with some tests written in Cypress, some of the tests are failing and you are supposed to fix them, some require a fix in the app rather than the tests and there are other improvements that need to be done to run the tests independently, use better assertions, better selectors and structure of the code. Cultural - This stage has happened with one of their engineering managers. You should pass this easily if you have worked in a bank before or understand how that goes, do the minimum effort to read about Mettle and have some years of experience working in a proper tech company without being a pain to your colleagues. Pros: They seem like a cool bunch, and probably a good work environment if you are into banks that happen to be a start-up (even though they really aren't as NatWest is their big daddy) Full remote Interesting tech stack, they have mentioned ARGO cd, Premium Cypress, Rest-assured Cons: Very rigid interview, you are not allowed to go off their script and are not interested in a different approach. You need to do things their way or the highway, I wonder if is like this only during the interview process. They push people to elaborate on things that are not comfortable with, at least allow them to do the ones they are more confident first. The hiring process is way too long, I do understand they wanna hire the right people and I was told right from the start about the length of the interview but for my hiring experience, I could have jumped to a conclusion way sooner. I wonder on what else they spend their time at work after these excessively lengthy interviews. I felt like I was treated like a number, there has not been a single question that has given me the impression they have read my resume and I've talked with 6 of their people. Tips: Overall the interview is not difficult, what will make it seem hard is their secrecy (is always like that with banks... that and fancy job titles) about what to expect, for e.g. if I was told there is going to be an algorithmical code challenge but you are not allowed to cheat I could have prepared better. Like any bank I got to work with they seem to be really hyped about corporate bovine manure words like synergy, shift left, early adopters, bleeding edge, etc so make sure you use that.
