      Data Scientist Interview

      12 Oct 2015
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Meta in Sept 2015

      Interview

I submitted my resume for a data scientist position. After few days a recruiter reached out to me telling me that he would like me to interview for another position in data engineering. It was fine by me to do that since the title itself is not the main goal. The first interview was a screening one and it was easy. It was a very traditional interview, however, the only difference I would think of is that the interviewer asked technical questions during the screening. The second interview was a coding interview. It was a two phase process of programming and databases. The programming part was easy, the question is actually easier than all I prepared for and I was ready for a lot of data structure questions, my code ran successfully but the interviewer seemed bitter about it even though it ran and I did not understand that. The database part also was easy, however, the interviewer was very unclear while describing the question so it took me about ten minutes to understand what does he want. He kept changing his requirements and giving me distracting information. I told him I need to know what does he want in order to write the code. I got the code running but to be honest I did not get it running immediately, it took me another ten minutes. After that I felt like he personally did not like me even though my code ran with no mistakes. The most horrible part is that I stayed waiting two weeks and then I emailed him back. He told me he does not know the decision and told me to reach out to the recruiter. The recruiter told me he forgot to send me an email that I was rejected. Honestly, that was very unprofessional. For these three reasons: 1) When doing a coding interview, you have to expect that the person might make a mistake while writing the code. We are human beings. But if he gets it to work then he knows what he is doing 2) When you set a goal for someone and he makes it, please do not tell him he was not good enough. That puts you in a very embarrassing position 3) When you do an interview with someone, even if he is not up to your mighty standards. Please tell him that he is not up to your class

      Question 1

I do not think its legal to share the questions. They were basic coding questions that most practice books have already

      Easy interview

      Application

      Interview

A friend who worked at Meta recommended I apply, which led to a direct connection with the hiring team. My interview journey included a technical screen focused on product metrics and a behavioral interview. The final round faced me with a practical question about measuring success for a new push notification feature. Funny enough, I had found similar questions in the company-specific prompt section on PracHub, which helped me approach it confidently. Ultimately, I received an offer but decided to decline it for personal reasons.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

How would you measure the success of a new push notification feature on Instagram? Walk through your primary metric, guardrail metrics, how you'd design the A/B test (randomization unit, sample size, duration), and the tradeoffs between short-term engagement lift and long-term retention impact.

Completed 3 rounds of the process, which includes the initial recruiter screen, technical, full loop, and team matching. Couldn't move past the full loop interview. The interview was very engaging, and I actually enjoyed working through the cases. No crazy questions.
