      Management Trainee Interview

      15 Dec 2018

      Elmhurst, IL
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied in-person. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at McMaster-Carr (Elmhurst, IL) in Aug 2018

      Interview

I was contacted by a recruiter on LinkedIn. I ignored their first message, but accepted their invitation for a phone interview on second contact. The interview went well and I was invited to the branch for an interview. I was local, so they offered a car service the pick me up and bring me home. I arrived and was given my schedule for the day which included head shots and short bios of the 7 people I'd be meeting with over my 6-hour day (all Ivy grads). First interview was a tour with case questions sprinkled throughout. Then met with a manager who asked me about my undergraduate research, my approaches, and hurdles I had to over come in that project. Then was lunch with two management trainees, followed by two more interviews after lunch. My interview day was a Friday, and I received my offer via phone the following Wednesday. I never felt as though they were trying to trick me. Now that I've been in the position for a few months, their approach to recruiting and interviewing makes sense to me. They want fresh eyes on things often. They're looking to tap your thought process and approach to solving problems that you're not familiar with, not necessarily a "right" answer. In the end, I'm glad that I didn't ignore my recruiter the second time! Everyone made me feel valued as a candidate and they were quick to get back with their answer.

      Interview

The interview process was absolutely phenomenal from start to finish. I really appreciated that the discussions were fully behavioral, allowing me to naturally draw on my past experiences. Furthermore, the company truly goes out of its way to treat you like a VIP throughout the entire visit, covering a remarkably nice hotel stay and providing a generous stipend to ensure you are completely comfortable.
