      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Labman Automation (Stokesley, England) in Jun 2024

      Interview

I had two meetings over Teams. The first was with a lovely lady from HR who asked me a selection of approx. 25 questions on a wide range of subjects. She asked about my salary expectation during the call and I specified the lower limit of what I could accept. I then had a call with the team leaders for the electrical and mechanical departments and we discussed my skill set and salary came up again where I reiterated the lower limit of salary I could accept. I then went for a face to face meeting. I was given a set of 6 tasks to assess different skills/abilities in a relatively short time. After the time was up they came and discussed my tasks with me reviewing if I'd attempted/completed them all and asked relevant questions about the tasks and discussed any improvements that could be made. We then had a team concept meeting where I was leading the meeting with a whiteboard and marker and they gave me a customer briefing that was to design a project. I sketched my ideas and they questioned and contributed in equal measure until we came up with an elegant potential solution to the customer request. The task had various mechanical and electrical challenges to think about. After that we sat down and spoke about me, they asked about my experience, my interest in labman and what I see myself doing there. They also enquired about my CV which they'd studied and asked about a short time that wasn't accounted for which I'd removed due to the experience being less relevant to Engineering. We also discussed an expected salary and what my lower limit would be due to my initial statement being at the higher end of the range that they might pay someone. That concluded the meeting and they said they'd be back to me early the following week. Each time I met with Labman was on a Friday. Whether it was a video call or face to face I was told they would get back to me early the following week - this always ended up being an entire week or more. In the end I was told that I interviewed very well but with my CV and experience they couldn't meet my salary expectation. Probably could have identified this earlier in the process but it was a good experience attempting their skills tasks.

      Question 1

What do you see yourself doing at Labman?

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Labman Automation (Stokesley, England)

      Interview

Very interesting interview process. FIrst a phone call with one of the managers where I was asked 40 "general knowledge" questions in a row and then the last question was "how many do you think you got right". Then I was invited on site, the interview was a few hours long and it was very practical, I had to solder a plug, design a vial stand, describe how to open/close a lid of a jar without using the words "clockwise" or "left/right", ... It was a very interesting interview. It was not difficult but rather unusual.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

How would you design a stand for this vial? How would you describe how to open/close a lid without using terms like "clockwise" or "left/right"?
