      Entry Level Software Engineer Interview

      Application

I applied through other source. I interviewed at Kidaptive

      Interview

Brought me into a room to meet with Dylan which came off as fairly informal - was asked about my past work experience before being asked to define technology. Then was met with various interviewers, one of which didn't have any questions prepared, so came up with one on the spot. Worked through each problem I was given vocally, explaining my thought process. Lastly met with Ashraf, who started asking me questions regarding databases and tables. No real feedback was given. Was sent an email a few days later telling me that they were "impressed by my skillset" but were ultimately looking for someone who matched "what they need on the team". I asked for clarification, but radio silence on their end.

      Question 1

Considering we are developing a program that allows for a user to "open" and "close" a book to start and finish a story, respecitvely, and given two lists that hold the start and end times for each story being read, how would one calculate the total time spent reading these stories? (Must account for errors that could arise, like having multiple start times with only 1 finish time)

[Response from Kidaptive's SVP of Engineering Ashraf Jahangeer] Hi, First of all, thanks a lot for providing feedback on our interview process. It helps to hear from candidates how we are doing and how we can improve our processes. I would like to address some of the concerns you brought up: We prepare the strategy of interview and areas to be covered for each candidate before the interview. Sometimes the questions might seem to lack detail, but that's purposefully done to get candidates to think through the problem and then try to come up with a solution. Regarding the no feedback. I'm very sorry, but I have a policy of not providing feedback beyond whether a candidate is or is not a good match. One of the main reasons is that we judge the candidates based on the standards we have in our team, and things might be very different from a candidate's perspective, so we prefer to avoid giving feedback that may not add a lot of value to your job search. Again, thanks for your feedback, and good luck in your job search. Ashraf
