I submitted my resume via an internal referral and received an email from the program director within two days to set up a phone interview.
The phone interview consists of all behavioral questions and some about what you know about the company. Know the STAR method and be prepared to give real scenarios and experience. At the end of the phone interview, if the manager likes you, you'll receive an invitation for an in person interview.
The in person interview will be with the program director and will be more about your past experience and skills. Come in knowing what you want to do in your career and why. The are looking for people who are ambitious and go-getters. Technical skills are great to talk about but the interviewer is looking for indicators that you are capable and want to learn. The worst you can do is act like a know it all. If you don't know something, just say you don't and that's fine. After the sit down interview, if it is going well, you'll be given a tour of the office and meet the other interns and key people in the company. Be prepared to give your elevator speech to everyone you meet. Personal interaction and communication skills shows you'll be a good fit culturally. Usually at the end of the office tour you'll know if you are hired.
