      Software Engineer Interview

      13 May 2020
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Los Angeles, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at GoFundMe (Los Angeles, CA) in Apr 2020

      Interview

I applied for the job through the website and got a response back right away from a recruiter. We had a back and forth and scheduled a phone call. The phone call was your standard recruiter screening where they describe what the company does and what your role may look like. However, the chat got weird after I asked her how the company was doing during the covid pandemic and what their runway and burn rate looked like. As a prospective candidate, I have been asking every company that I interview this question given the uncertainty of the economy. She didn't give me an answer (which is fine) however she told me not to ask that question to the hiring manager as they may "feel negatively" about me. I thought that was a very strange response and frankly she seemed out of touch. As a recruiter I would think that you would be expecting candidates to ask such question during this time. I moved on to the next round after several weeks (which again is not a big deal given the circumstances of the pandemic). I had an interview with a senior engineer and an engineering manager where the engineer began by asking me questions regarding my experience with Redux. The interview took a weird turn when the manager started to ask me questions about my prior company. He asked me more questions about what my company did rather than asking me questions about my skillset and what I can bring to the table. At the end of the interview, he talked about what to expect in the final rounds of the interviewing process. A couple days later I received an email from the recruiter that the company decided not to move forward with me. Because the engineering manager talked to me about the details of the next steps I thought that the interview must have gone pretty well so I was taken aback by the email. I replied to the recruiter and asked if she could provide me with some feedback so that I can improve my interviewing skills for my next one. She didn't respond. I emailed her again. No response. I get that it might not be her responsibility to supply candidates with feedback but honestly the whole process left a bad taste in my mouth. I thought that the recruiter wasn't very thoughtful and that the engineering manager didn't take much of an interest in me as a candidate.

      Question 1

What was your experience working with Redux? What were some problems you faced?
