It was an unprofessional and pretty rude train wreck to be honest. I really wanted to apart of an international team and market and was recommended to apply here . The job description, which was written in English, stated that they needed a native English speaker. Good level of Spanish. Cool. Got this.
The first interview was at 7am on Hangouts since I was located in the US. The first question was asking about salary. I stated that I could discuss that with her later & it depended on a few factors but the pressure was on for me to give a number. Any number. She refused to budge until I threw out a number. I then get interrogated if I'm legal to work in Spain. After insisting a few times that I'm legal, she she says if we could switch to Spanish for the rest of the time. I really have no problem speaking in Spanish after living in Spain for 8 years, but at 7am and with a company that's trying to push to be internationally recognized I felt like I was caught off guard. I fumbled and asked to switch back into English so I could better describe my work experience. Clara was *beyond* annoyed and was sighing, smirking, and rolling her eyes for the rest of the interview. I felt pretty uncomfortable trying to finish up an interview that I knew was turning into a dumpster fire.
Again, if you're trying to promote your startup as international, "good vibes", and inclusive, you'd better take a look at the company culture that you're immediately showing to candidates as your first impression. For me, it was brash, unprofessionally handled, and a "Spain first" attitude that will give this company the inability to progress forward into a competitive international market.
