I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at GitHub in Oct 2022
Interview
Was approached by HR and an interview was too scheduled but at very last minute the HR had to called off because he was on annual leave and told will followup later. Now not replying to my emails seems have ghosted me out :-(

There were a total of four interview rounds: a recruiter screening, a hiring manager interview, and a loop consisting of system design and coding rounds. The interviews went very well, and after each round, the interviewers seemed highly impressed and mentioned that I would hear back from the recruiter soon. However, I was ultimately rejected because the decision came down to a very close comparison between me and another candidate. Additionally, the recruiter was not very helpful throughout the process, which made the experience more frustrating.
I applied online and was asked to provide availability a couple days after. Took two weeks to book an appointment. I was pretty excited to interview Github but the screening call was a real letdown. The interviewers could not or would not give any relevant information about the position and the organization and there a very distinct age bias. The "process" was explained to me: 5 interviews! EM meeting, 2 coding rounds followed by a behavioral interview and a system deiagn interview (that's before meeting HR): everything from the book to dilute responsibility and avoid accountability, which is a big red flag. The third red flag: being ghosted.
In summary :
- age bias
- unrealistic process
- ghosting
I expected GitHub to treat its candidates, especially at the executive level, with a higher level of communication and professionalism. While the interviewers themselves were thoughtful, respectful, and clearly strong at what they do, the overall experience fell short.
Partway through the process, communication from HR stopped completely. My follow-up emails went unanswered, and I received no updates on status or next steps. This lack of closure was both surprising and disappointing given the company’s reputation.
GitHub has built an incredible brand and community, which is why this experience stands out even more. There’s a clear opportunity to improve candidate communication and ensure that all applicants, regardless of outcome, are treated with transparency and respect.
