I applied online and received a callback from HR. We spoke for about 15 minutes by phone. The HR Associate didn't seem interested. Next thing I know, I get an email requesting that I complete an assignment so they can assess my skills for the job. The assignment was to read a live confidential client document which was 25+ pages and respond to a series of questions about it. This may be beneficial to them but very inappropriate to ask a candidate to do so early in the interview process.
