      Chemical Engineer Interview

      1 Jul 2021
      Anonymous employee
      Kuala Lumpur
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at ExxonMobil (Kuala Lumpur) in May 2021

      Interview

So, I have decided to write this review as I only found one really helpful comprehensive review prior to my Exxonmobil interview. AndI hope this would help my fellow engineering graduates to prepare for this interview in the future. In summary: total of 3 interviews were done in 2 days within 1 month. These 2 days were 2 weeks apart in my case. First stage: -2 back-to-back zoom call interview sessions lasting about 1 hour long each. -the two interviews were done by two different engineers/business manager separately. -behaviourial STAR format questions + casual kinda conversations + a little question regarding your project/experience written in CV. The first stage interviews for me was mostly behaviourial questions after the "introduce yourself" question. Just go through STAR questions that you can find on the internet and be prepared for that. It was fun for me as I already knew what am I going to answer during the interview. But it will be tiring if you are not prepared for this. Just recall back all your past experiences, projects and achievements and relate them to the questions. There were no technical question for me, until I mentioned that I did a research on cancer treatment. Then, the interviewer ask about the cancer treatment to me. So, just be careful and not to go into too much details of your project unless if you are prepared to answer questions regarding your projects. Second Stage: (2 weeks after the first stage) -1 hour zoom call interviews -the panel interviews consists of 2 senior engineers -technical interview For my final stage interviews, my interview started with introducing myself questions, followed by technical questions on my previous project (CV-related questions) and then my interest in joining ExxonMobil (as I was working with other company at that time). Then, we started with the technical part of the interviews which most of the questions were some very basic engineering stuffs that you should know from first 2 years of you degree. Explaining the process, draw up the schematic of the equipments and explain how it works, and then troubleshooting problem for the equipment. However, just to put in mind that there is no right or wrong answers for troubleshooting, as long as your answer is logical to the assumptions that you made, you ll be fine. If you dont know something, DONT MAKE UP ANSWER (you will need to explain your answer). Be honest and ask them. My technical part of the interview finished 20 minutes earlier than the allocated 1 hour, so the interviewers asked me a few behaviourial questions and the typical interview questions which I will be listing down later in this review. The whole interview took me 1 month after I have waited for 6 months to hear back from them. (I was told that you have higher chance to get it earlier if you graduated with First class, but who knows. lol). Overall, I really enjoyed my conversation with the panel interviewers despite having to talk virtually. They really helped to ease me up into the interview when I was dead nervous at the start of the interview. They really put effort in getting to know me as their potential coworker. I asked a lot of questions during both interviews, which were both, work-related and non-work related. But they really enjoyed talking about non-work related stuffs about themselves and this also helped me to establish a good connection with the interviewers. Well, this is just how I do things during my interview and you dont have to do it if you're not comfortable. The interview is more than just an interview, it is actually for them to get to know you better. So, just be yourself :) I hope this is helpful for you. And goodluck for the interview!

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

1st stage: tell me about your projects? tell the time you have to make small changes to your work? time with difficult team member? time solving complex problem? time you asked too much question? time you have different ideas from your team? time you showed leadership role? time you adapted to different background ppl in your team? tell me about your mistakes? (STAR behaviourial questions, you can find a lot of these on google) Final stage: explain the distillation process that was done in my project and why you choose that? What is your interest in working for Exxonmobil? Troubleshooting question for distillation tower/heat exchangers. Tell me about the time you are disatisfied with your work? What do you expect from Exxonmobil? What do your expectation for the first 90 days in this position? Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Time and project management question.

      Application

I applied through university. I interviewed at ExxonMobil (Kuala Lumpur) in Oct 2025

      Interview

The interview invitation was given only two days in advance, which made it challenging for me to arrange transportation and accommodation. The interviewers were friendly and approachable. However, I feel that I didn’t perform as well as I could have, mainly due to limited preparation for the technical questions. The interview covered my resume, included a few behavioural questions, and a case study. The case study itself was not particularly difficult.
