Interview
The initial interviews with the HR team member as well as the person I would be directly reporting to, were absolutely fantastic. Very easy to keep the conversation going and were genuinely kind.
The hiring manager seemed incredibly interested and explained that the department head would just be the final ok, but that it was primarily their decision. The next interview was quickly scheduled and I felt extremely positive going into it. Unfortunately, it quickly became the single most uncomfortable interview of my life. Everyone in the department except for 1 person had been there less than a year, including the department head, but at least they were very upfront about their turnover. I actually marked that I was disabled as I have previously run into issues before with workplaces and had no intention of hiding anything. The first 15-20 min was this person telling me their entire work history and how they came to Encompass to work for a specific person. The entire time this went on, the video was distorted and it sounded like they had a conference call playing in the background the entire time. This person came off as incredibly privileged and spoke about themselves taking a year off of work and discussing their next career move with their “mentor”. If we could all be that lucky… I think the worst part came when they asked me why I stayed in a position if there weren’t growth opportunities. I felt cornered because I didn’t want to go into detail about my illness then, but I’ll state why here so maybe if someone from the company reads this they can be a little more aware next time. I didn’t leave that company because I’m disabled, and I had insurance and decent pay, and I couldn’t afford to lose it or FMLA. Not all of us have the luxury of sitting back for a year and planning our next move. This person clearly was only interested in someone who was just like them, and I had zero desire to work for someone like this who was more interested in discussing themselves and their own career goals. Another question I asked was about if they are accessible to employees to reach out to- and the answer was essentially “sort of”. I was given the impression they don’t want to be bothered by peons like me, but if there was no one else, then they would, but they’d want the message to be direct and to the point. This was in a department of 4 people total. It was just laughable to me how completely out of touch this person was with the realities of most people. They clearly would not be very open or accommodating to someone with a disability in their dept. The person who would have been my manager left less than 6 months later….pretty telling.
Easy, pretty quick and meeting different stakeholders. Not a very long process be prepared to share specific examples and why you have interest within the company, be sure to ask mindful questions
