      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Cow Protocol in Feb 2024

      Interview

I was contacted by their internal recruiter over Linkedin. They send you a job description and a presentation about company values, which states that they're very open with feedback, even if you don't pass, because they value your time. Before a phone call about the role, you are given a take home assignment (mine was in Rust because that was my position) to solve over a couple of days and submit a PR. Assignment wasn't leetcode style, more of a "implement a thing in Rust", maybe there are examples online. If you pass, you won't be notified or get any PR feedback - instead, you'll get an invite to a recruiter call where they describe company structure, teams, etc. This is still very superficial because the HR person doesn't know what you're applying for specifically. Next step is talk with a developer from a team you'll be working in. They can finally answer some concrete questions about the role. Don't relax yet, this is still a technical interview step. Before the meeting, they say you'll be going over the code you wrote, but we didn't go over anything. Dev tested me on various technical topics surrounding the language like memory structure implementations, memory management, tokio, async etc. Next step is talk with the CTO... which is another technical interview. This one is even more hands on than the talk with dev, it's basically a leetcode style test. You'll get a puzzle to implement, iterate on it, then get asked various DSA questions. Finally, there's an interview with a CEO, which is supposed to be a "culture fit" evaluation. Not sure what the point of this was: she asks you typical corporate questions like "How did you handle a conflict with your colleague" or "Do you remember a time you were emotionally hurt and how did you handle it". While answering, there is no conversation: she mutes herself and types your responses in, what I'm assuming is some kind of form, to be evaluated later. It was a bit stiff and non-relaxed because no matter your response, the follow-up question was always something picked out of a HR question handbook, not something linked to the answer you gave. After this call they said to get back within 2 days. I gave them a week, then sent a question asking whether I passed the final rounds. You get a courtesy message about "them finding a better fit", but no feedback like it was stated in their company values presentation. Because CEO and CTO interviews are scheduled regardless if you pass one or the other, you won't know which one of them caused you not to get an offer. My follow up email asking for some feedback was ghosted. In summary, 3 technical rounds with a stiff "culture fit" questionnaire: I don't think it was worth it. You usually get EITHER take home assignment or live coding. Here they test you on both + another round getting tested by the dev. Too much time invested and zero feedback Offered pay was 90k€, which is on the low end for a crypto startup.
