      Software Developer Interview

      28 Sept 2015
      Anonymous employee
      Columbus, OH
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at CoverMyMeds (Columbus, OH) in Sept 2015

      Interview

There was a phone interview followed by a screen-sharing coding interview online with a developer. He took me through a series of questions where I had to write code live, on the spot, while he watched. Not a bad process, but a little awkward to think and type while someone is quietly watching your every move! The final step was a full-day on-site coding interview. I was given a programming project when I arrived, met with my "customer" (it was sort of a role-play), and got to work. Had some good interaction with a few developers and DBAs around the office. Mostly I spent the day hammering out code to fulfil my project requirements. It was a lot of work. Lunch was provided though I ate at the desk while I continued to work. The project is very large but it is totally possible to complete something presentable. At the end of the day I presented my work to a panel of employees who asked questions and gave suggestions. Overall the coding day was rather stressful, but that's probably the point. In retrospect I should have spent lunch socializing with others in order to learn more about the company and/or the team to which I was applying. Fortunately I got enough done during the day that by the time my pair programming partner arrived around 3:00, I decided to just spend the rest of our time together asking him questions about working at CoverMyMeds.

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at CoverMyMeds (Columbus, OH)

      Interview

I got through 2 rounds of interviews, one being a phone screen and the other being technical. The technical interview was initially scheduled for a week after the initial phone call but was rescheduled for two weeks afterward due to unforeseen circumstances. I thought it wasn't a big deal; things happen. When interview day came, I joined a Microsoft Teams meeting and sat there for roughly 30 minutes without anyone joining before leaving. I sent a follow-up email to the recruiter asking why I sat in a meeting nobody attended. Near the end of the day, I got a response stating that the interviewer had something come up, so they couldn't attend. That left a sour taste in my mouth, but I continued rescheduling again against my better judgment. Once the day finally came, I was greeted by two seemingly friendly people, one engineer and the hiring manager. From there, I was tasked with doing three problems, each in different coding languages, and was told I couldn't look anything up. Both interviewers were distracted and didn't care very much about what I was doing. For reference, these weren't leetcode-style problems; one was solving a particular whiteboard-style problem. A couple of times, I needed help with specific syntax that could be found in a simple Google search. I was blankly stared at. After the meeting concluded, I sent two follow-up emails, but I didn't get a response. I was completely ghosted. Overall, it was a pretty terrible experience, and I'm glad I was spared.
