      Senior QA Engineer Interview

      6 Jun 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Seattle, WA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Compass (Seattle, WA) in May 2021

      Interview

I applied trough Linkedin. The overall communication process was fine. The company internal recruiter rescheduled my first interview multiple times, but he was always in touch with me prior, so, nothing negative at this moment. After the very first phone call interview he sent me a take home assessment, which they prefer to get back in the couple of hours, which was impossible to do since they did not provide you a framework. They think, that you can write entire framework + all methods + all assertions + page object models + test itself + dig with the requirements + they would like you to write the whole documentation with instruction on how to install and run this framework on UNIX OS, even if you don't have UNIX machine at this time on your hands in couple of hours? All other companies I've being interviewed always provided me the ready to use framework, so you are not spending the time on it. So, I spent entire work day on everything listed above. My framework build from scratch, all methods, page object models, assertions, test and documentation (I installed UNIX virtual machine on my laptop to make sure, that installation process is really works) and I sent them it for review. Couple days later I got response back from their recruiter, that they would like me to take the next step interview with one of their Engineers for coding challenge. The interview took about 1 hour and went really smooth. The interviewer was pretty nice and open to talk. We discussed the code, methods and the entire framework that I build for them and sent them few days prior. Couple days later after this coding challenge interview I got response back from their recruiter, that they would like to proceed to the next step with me. The next step is a 3.5 hours interview process with two more engineers and manager. The first negative experience, is that the recruiter did not scheduled any time brakes between. So, it is a 3.5 hours straight interview process when you don't have time to visit a restroom, or take a breath and drink some water. The interviewers changed every hour without a single minute for brake. Very negative experience. The first interviewer during this 3.5 hours interview process was absolutely not prepared for the interview. Interviewer started discussing my framework I did for them, but they never run it and they did not installed it, despite the fact, that I attached very detailed documentation and installation readme file. Also, the interviewer was not aware about what was the take home assessment I did and what was the requirements for it. Interviewer tried to prove to me that I was wrong and the requirements were not the same what I did, to which I opened an email in front of interviewer (I shared my screen) and showed the email with the requirements they sent me. Interviewer didn't feel embarrassed, but immediately changed the subject to the fact that I did not cover all sorts of edge cases. I said, that in real life situation, I will cover all possible sort of edge cases, but this is a take home assessment, which should not take more than couple of hours, and it is impossible to build an entire framework and cover all possible edge cases even if I don't know the product and this is the first time when I see this product in my life and I did everything what was in the requirements they sent me. I did 100% coverage of what they asked and even more. At this time I just realized, that interviewer was absolutely not prepared and had no idea what we are talking about and what to ask. The second interviewer during this 3.5 hours interview process, who did another coding challenge with me. Interviewer was prepared and was fine during the interview process, but they did not provided me any feedback during the interview. The question was about sort and find a number in array. I solved the problem during the interview, but I did not received any realtime feedback. The third interviewer during this 3.5 hours interview process was a very negative experience of communicating with interviewer, since, firstly, interviewer was completely unprepared and told me this openly, and secondly, interviewer was eating all the time during the interview with me. I don't understand this, if you know that you have an interview with a candidate, why you couldn't eat 10 minutes before the interview or after the interview? Why you eat and chomp during interviews? Why should I watch this? But at the same time, you did not even give me a 5 minute break during these 3.5 hours for me to go to the bathroom! I believe that you need to be an example, and if you eat during an interview, what positive example can you set? If I started eating and chomping during an interview with you and you were looking at how I eat, would you give me a positive or negative feedback? Would you hire me?
