I applied online. The process took 6 months. I interviewed at Civil Service Fast Stream (London, England) in Apr 2015
Interview
Online psychometric testing, online competency testing, online e-tray exercise, assessment centre which included a leadership exercise, policy recommendation exercise, group exercises and competency interview. The process lasted a full day. This has now been updated, there are no longer psychometric tests and there is a regional assessment centre in Newcastle.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Tell me about a time when.... (competency interview)
Hard, time consuming, rushed even though it was long and took nearly all day. Felt awkward over zoom, would have preferred it to be in person. Interviewers were nice. Long took nearly all day. Very competitive.

Interview
The interview process was structured and professional, with clear communication throughout. Questions focused on competencies and situational judgment, requiring thoughtful, well-structured answers. Preparation is essential—especially understanding the Civil Service Behaviours framework. The panel was friendly and supportive, creating a fair atmosphere despite the challenging nature of the questions. Feedback was constructive and provided promptly. Overall, a thorough and transparent process that tests both analytical skills and values alignment.
