The department is the Innovation and Technology department. The mission statement of the department promises to provide exciting, challenging, and rewarding work assignments that will contribute to continued professional growth. Because of this, I was very excited to be selected for an interview. I have many years of varied experience and felt confident applying for any position that involves managing data and developing systems. However, during the interview, the manager of the department made it very clear that everyone is very busy maintaining a number of third party applications. No development...AND they are backlogged. I couldn't help but ask myself, what is so 'innovative' about this department because I get the impression there is no actual innovation happening. Anyway, I was not selected to continue to the next step. My mistake may have been assuming they needed an IT person. I think if I had stated, rather than my experience, that I am flexible and a fast learner, I might have made it. The position sounds pretty dull but the benefits and a pension sounds great AND they get paid exceedingly well for the kind of work I get the impression they are doing.
