The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Caltrans (San Diego, CA) in Jan 2009
Interview
The hiring process started off with an online self-assessment to pre rank yourself. If you ranked high enough for an interview you are contacted to set up a time.
The interview process was 2 parts; written and oral. The written part of the interview was 20 minutes and it was a scenario that you had to talk about the environmental process of a proposed project. The oral portion of the interview was a 3 person panel interview where different questions were asked about yourself, experience and education.

Very extensive and very comprehensive interview. There is a writing section and a panel interview. It does take a while to get a call for an interview. Definitely need to study for this interview.

Interview
Webex interview with a panel of three senior environmental planners at Caltrans. They all seemed to be very serious prior to the interview, so I felt a bit intimidated. After the interview was complete they opened up a bit.
