      Ruby On Rails Developer Interview

      13 Jul 2016
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Calendly in Jun 2016

      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Calendly (Atlanta, GA) in Mar 2016

      Interview

Initial phone call Take home assignment Follow-up phone call -- Mostly discussed coding practices. Then they showed me code samples and I showed them my code samples. They then asked that I perform a take-home assignment. I usually don't agree to these things as they tend to be a waste of time, but they offered to pay me $300 and promised it would only take about 3 hours. The take-home assignment actually took all weekend to complete even in the most minimal form. Seems part of the analysis was how I would respond to a client with big dreams and small budgets. During the follow-up interview they frequently complimented me on what a great job I did. They even paid me the $300 (less PayPal fees -- classy move). Then they vanished into the ether. If you value your time, I'd suggest staying away.

      Question 1

Am I equally comfortable with the front-end of the Rails stack as I am with the backend?

Thanks for taking the time to interview. While we thought you had impressive skills, we needed someone more passionate about our company growth and product. We wish you the best of luck.

      Interview

The process was pretty typical. Phone screen was done by HR with some lightly technical questions, followed by an interview with two other employees with technical questions having more of an architectural point of view. This was where the process ended. I interviewed in the middle of the week and was told that I would hear back by the end of the week. Come the end of the week I reached out to HR to request an update. I was told that one of the employees who had interviewed me was OOO the next week so things were a tad bit chaotic. I let them know that I needed to have some bit of an answer by the middle of the following week and I was told: "I'll try". Come two weeks later, from the last interview I had, I still haven't heard anything back.

      Question 1

I'd prefer to not give up any questions aside from just making sure that you have a modern understanding of the full stack.

Sorry for the negative experience. We are unsure why they did not receive our message we informing them we could not move as quickly as their other offers. We try our best to be as transparent as possible in the recruitment process. Congratulations on your new role!
