      Copywriter Interview

      16 Nov 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      New York, NY
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Bombas (New York, NY) in Oct 2017

      Interview

A recruiter reached out to me on LinkedIn and once I agreed to move forward, he quickly set up a phone screen with the Chief Brand Officer within the week. The phone screen was great, and he told me at the end of the call that he wanted me to come up. That evening we were scheduling my interview. A week later, I went in for an in-person interview with the VP of Digital Product, then CBO, then VP of People and Head of Culture. I will say that the in-person interview process was incredibly pleasant, and one of the better experiences I've had as a candidate. The interview went well and extended past the allotted hour. Everyone was really nice and engaging and it felt like it was just as much about the skill set as the culture fit. It was implied at the end of the interview I'd be coming in again for more interviews and getting a writing test. They did ask that I be patient since I was one of the first people they were bringing in, which I completely understood. A few days later, I got a heads up about the writing test from the recruiter, who confirmed that the interview went well. The Head of Culture and two other recruiters who I hadn't talked to before gave me the actual test over email with a weekend to complete it. Despite not getting the complete materials until the morning of the due date, I still turned it around on time. After the writing test, the experience started to go down hill. The recruiter said the test was really strong. Then, at the end of the week, the recruiter asked me if the "offer details were right" and if I was "interested in moving forward". Confused, I expressed I was still interested, and he essentially told me to hold tight but that they really liked me. For the next three weeks, he kept pushing back the decision date. After the fourth week, he didn't respond to my last message. With no response, I had to follow up, only for him to confirm that they were going in a different direction. Honestly, wouldn't be surprised if I would have never heard an answer either way. While I had great interactions with the actual Bombas employees, the end of the process left a lot to be desired.

      Interview

The interview process was very straightforward, which I appreciated! Two weeks after I sent in my resume and cover letter, I received an edit test, which I completed over a long weekend. After submitting that, I was then scheduled for a brief phone interview. No trick questions — just a candid conversation about my experience as well as some of the nitty gritty job details. Soon after that, I was asked to come in and meet my immediate managers. They were warm and welcoming when asking about my background, my work, as well as why I wanted to join the Hive. My next and last step was to meet with 6 other managers within the company, one-by-one. It sounds intimidating, but everyone was extremely friendly. You'll be fine as long as you truly understand your role, your skills, and how they can complement other people's jobs. It was a little bit of a lengthy process, but their thoroughness is what allowed me — and their team — to make the best decision. I never once felt in the dark, and I always knew I could reach out for any questions or status updates.

      Interview

Painless! In fact, I really enjoyed my conversations with everyone at Bombas. It was a fairly extensive process (a copy test, phone screen, a first round in-person, and a final round in-person interview with 6-ish executives) but I found everyone to be genuine and easy to talk to. There were no gotcha questions or tests, and I felt that I had ample space to speak about my skillset and ask questions. Plus, I walked out of the interview with some socks! Nice touch.
