      Software Engineer Interview

      15 Jun 2022
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Sydney
      Declined offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Atlassian (Sydney) in May 2022

      Interview

Was initially contact by a internal recruiter. Recruiters give you a lot of resources to prior to the interviews, unfortunately it is against company policy to give you feedback in a written form. 5 stages; Code design, Data structures, System Design, Values & Manager I found all the interviews fairly easy, code ones didn't seem to hard, both questions seem straight forward. Since you can use any language for those questions use what you are strongest in (not what would be easier) + definitely have a testing framework ready. Also be wary if you choose a language that is not used widely at Atlassian your interviewer may not know it. Reason I say go with the strongest is if you are coming in at a higher level the bigger the expectation is. So you will get penalised harder for simply syntax mistakes which will ultimately come back and hurt you in their final decision. I feel like they really find any excuse when interviewing you at a higher level to move you down levels. For instance when I got an offer they offered one level lower because of the feedback in prior rounds. In the manager interview I didn't show enough "working as a team experience/skills" even tho I have 7+ years of experence working in teams as software engineer. There seems to be no room for implied experience and skill in the interview, so in your answers for the behavioural interview I think you'll benefit to touch as many different soft skills as you can per answer. Hopefully doing that will answers some of their hidden questions and criteria they may have as it looks like they don't explict ask for everything they want to know. For anyone reading who are going to start this interview process, just remember your success in the interview doesn't define you or your skills as a Software Engineer. It purely is just the opinion of those who interviewed you which can vary wildely as no person could accurately assess you in 45mins, your experience will heavly matter on your interviewer. I feel if I had a different Code design interviewer it would have worked out a lot better for myself

      Interview

Recruiter reached out to me then ghosted in the middle of trying to set up a meeting. Very disrespectful of my time. Just as well, how a company treats candidates is usually a good indicator of how they treat employees
